Zero waste: our composting plant
What's left over from the harvest goes back to the olive groves. How the plant we built with EU funding works.

An olive mill produces far more than oil. Every season leaves tonnes of leaves, twigs and milling residue. For years that was a problem; today we turn it into fertiliser.
What we built
With support from the European Union, through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Andalusian regional ministry of agriculture, we upgraded the mill with a composting plant. The goal is zero waste and a fully circular way of working.
How it works
The organic leftovers from the harvest are piled, turned and left to mature until they become compost. That compost goes back to our members' olive groves, where the olives came from.
And less energy, too
As part of the same project we improved the mill's energy efficiency and the recovery of by-products (file IA-O-09-14-2023-1-029).
